One of Puerto del Carmen’s oldest Irish bars celebrates a very special anniversary this month, as well as St. Patrick’s Day.

Their story began when Charlie and Marina Chapman opened “Charlie’s Bar” in 1985. Everyone loved Charlie’s and it was the place to be for good music and great craic.

With Charlie’s being such a success, they wanted to open another more quaint, traditional, authentic spot. They wanted a nice little Irish bar that made their patrons feel like they were walking into the heart of Ireland.

In 1994 they found a location, an old Armenian restaurant on Calle Jameos that had closed its doors a few years before. In a bad state of disrepair, they knew they had their work cut out for them.

With Ireland in mind, the pair sought all the materials to refurbish the bar from Ireland including the bricks, wood, floorboards and ceiling mouldings. Marina sourced wonderful antique and vintage items. Most of the original materials have survived and are still present in the bar to this day.

The bar eventually opened its doors in March 1995, taking the name “Craic n’ Ceol”, which is Irish for Fun n’ Music.

St. Patrick’s Day weekend seemed the ideal time to have their opening. Invitations were sent out to have a private opening night on March 15th. Due to an issue with water supply, the bar couldn’t open until the 16th. Eventually, their dream became a reality. A live music bar that was the most authentic Irish bar on the island.

Today, their son, Ryan Chapman, runs the bar and has been doing so since 2014. Sadly, Charlie isn’t here to see the 30th anniversary, but his son has done him proud in keeping the bar the success it was. The majority of customers that come into the Craic n’ Ceol always feel like they’re at home. A little bit of Ireland in the heart of Lanzarote.

The Gazette wish Craic n’ Ceol a very happy anniversary. Here’s to 30 more years!
