Ever wondered who is behind one of the exceptional private dining experiences on the island? We sat down with Nerina, the passionate chef and founder of Event And Catering Solutions Lanzarote, for a chat about her journey, her flavours, and what inspires her.
Where were you born?
I was born in the cathedral city of Lichfield in Staffordshire. My family history is rooted there. My grandfather was in the forces during the Second World War and was based in Austria, where my mum spent her early childhood. When he was posted back to the Staffordshire regiment, my mother met my father, and that is how I came to be born in Lichfield.

What made you become a chef?
My grandfather was a chef in the forces in the 1940s, and he passed the love of catering on to me. I first became involved with cooking as a very small child and really enjoyed it. I also loved Chemistry at school; the way things work together fascinated me.
I later worked on site at RAF Stafford alongside the Gurkha wives when the Ghurka and British Armed Forces chefs were on manoeuvres. At the end I was honoured to receive my very own miniature Kukri (the national weapon of Nepal.)
Have you ever entered any professional cooking competitions?
Yes, I entered MasterChef professional and reached the regional final for the Midlands. I grew up in a farming community, but I found my butchery skills were not quite up to scratch with the other competitors at that level.
You’ve mentioned different places. How long have you lived on Lanzarote?
I first came here in the mid-nineties. My work has taken me to different islands and places across Europe, both on shore and off shore, but Lanzarote has become a special base.

What’s your favourite style of cooking?
For entertaining, it has to be barbecues. You can have something for everybody, with lots of different flavours and textures across meats, fish, vegetarian, and vegan options. It is a fantastic way to dine Al Fresco, especially in a warm climate like ours.
What do you love best about cooking?
It brings people together, for whatever the occasion might be. We all share a love for food.
What are you best at, in terms of style or cuisine?
I can literally cook anything because of my background. I have cooked in different places, countries, and continents, on yachts and on working boats. That experience means I am not tied to one particular style. Cooking is an adventure, a flavour, taste, texture, and social adventure. It takes you on a journey and my customers love this.
What do you like to cook best, personally?
I love the bright, fresh flavours of Mediterranean food, and the use of fresh fish, fresh vegetables, salad, fruits, and lean meats.

Have you cooked for anyone well known?
Yes, one name that comes to mind is Sir Anthony Bamford, the chairman of JCB. I have also cooked at the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire, which was the home of Patrick, the 5th Earl of Lichfield.
What’s your favourite food?
Chocolate! But I cannot have too much of it because I am lactose intolerant. I think this actually makes me more aware and appreciative of the many different dietary requirements that people have.

Is there any food you don’t like?
I do not really like processed foods. Growing up in a farming community, and living in one on Lanzarote now, I was spoiled for choice with fresh produce. I naturally gravitate towards fresh, local ingredients and find it difficult to like processed foods.
What type of clients do you have here on Lanzarote?
All sorts. From families and friends celebrating special events, to companies like fashion houses doing photoshoots, which has been popular this winter with our beautiful flora and fauna. I also cater for health retreats. I get bookings from residents, too, who have family visiting and want to spend precious time socialising, not being tied to the kitchen.
Do you have a busy year ahead?
Yes, extremely busy. The peak times are pretty much full. The traditionally quieter months here are April, June, and September, which I still have some availability for at this moment.
Do you ever let anyone cook for you?
My Mum was an amazing cook and she used to do the most amazing roast dinners. Actually, when the first Cordon Bleu cookery courses came out, she did those courses and had all the books! Sadly, we lost Mum last year. My Husband Matt, of Electrical Solutions Lanzarote, does not cook very often, but he cooks a mean chili con carne when he does.
You live in Lanzarote, but where do you like to go on holiday?
I love living here, I am very lucky. But to have a complete break, I am really looking forward to visiting Greece after the summer. I cannot wait to experience Greek cuisine again.

Do you have any hobbies?
Cooking, of course! Despite being a chef, cooking is a great passion of mine, and the kitchen is my happy place.
Sailing is another passion of mine, I love being on, in, or near the water.
What music do you listen to?
I listen to everything, from classical to rock to modern day. I adore the 70s & 80s – my favourite bands are Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and The Eagles!
I love listening to and supporting my local radio station on Lanzarote, Monster Radio.
Do you have a favourite film?
Some of your readers will know this, I’m sure. My favourite film of all time is Shirley Valentine from 1989!

Lastly, do you have any cooking tips for our readers?
Everyone has a different budget, but always buy the best quality food that you can. Use fresh vegetables & fresh ingredients when possible. Look at what is in season because you will get a better price and better quality. I cook mainly with very good quality extra virgin olive oil. It is a healthier fat, I like the way it cooks, and I feel it brings out the flavour in the food.
