The Guardia Civil have caught fishermen using prohibited gear in Lanzarote, they had caught approximately 70 kilos of fish with the gear.

In May this year another fishing boat had been caught with 163 kilos of fish onboard while using prohibited fishing methods and gear which led to the Guardia Civil to remind residents of proper fishing methods and laws.

This week the Guardia Civil had spotted the fishing boat along the west coast of Lanzarote and scouted it. They observed that the fishermen were using prohibited fishing nets to catch the fish.

Unsurprisingly the two were met by the Guardia Civil when they came back to land. They found approximately 70 kilos of fish onboard along with 50-metre-long trawling nets.

An official complaint was made, citing the article 17. D from the Regulations of the Canary Islands Fishing Law decree, which states that fishing with that gear is prohibited with exceptions in certain areas on other islands. According to the law, violation of the article could result in a fine of 301 – 60,000 euros.
