A father and his son, who had been swept out to sea at Famara beach, were rescued by surf school monitors on Saturday.

In a statement, the monitors said “We had to abandon our classes to attend to the rescue… Had we not acted in time, we could be talking about two more tragic victims on Teguise’s coast”

The rescuers pointed out that the victims were tourists – “bathers, not surfers”, who did not know the real risks of a beach like Famara.

They also had strong words for Teguise Ayuntamiento, pointing out that lifesavers’ watchtowers that were installed earlier this year remained closed due to lack of staff.   They insist that “Famara needs personnel, resources, and active prevention.”
