The Yaiza Extremo Sur, a highlight of the municipality’s annual sporting calendar, returns for its sixth this month.

This year’s competition will be headlined by several notable riders. They include Dutch competitor Tessa Kortekaas, the current Spanish XCM (MTB Marathon) champion and a multiple winner of the prestigious Titan Desert. Also taking part are Gran Canaria’s Francisco Pérez ‘Picacho’, a participant in the Gravel World Championships, and the current Canary Islands gravel champions, Isabel Campos from Tenerife and Samuel Rodríguez from Lanzarote. They will lead the charge at the island’s premier MTB event on Sunday, November 23rd.

The races will follow two challenging routes. The 40-kilometre course is scheduled for an early morning start from Los Dolores in Mancha Blanca (Tinajo), while the 100-kilometre race will begin in Órzola (Haría). Both distances will converge on a shared finish line in the tourist town of Playa Blanca, within the municipality of Yaiza. The 40 km race forms part of the Fuerteventura-Lanzarote Inter-Island Cup, and the 100 km event counts towards the Canary Islands Gravel Championship.

Oscar Noda, the Mayor of Yaiza, emphasised the event’s significance, stating, “There is no doubt that our municipality not only sets the pace for island sports, as the facts show, but is also the great champion of the tourism-sports segment that Lanzarote sells in the national and international markets, as it is doing this week at the World Travel Market in London.”

The sporting weekend begins on Saturday, November 22nd, with a dedicated competition for younger mountain bikers, divided by age categories. This youth event will start at 3:00 p.m. in the vicinity of IES Yaiza.

Ángel Lago, Yaiza’s Councillor for Sports, commented, “We will have two days of pure sporting spectacle where cyclists and the public will enjoy the race and the landscapes that adorn its route. Yaiza Extremo Sur also represents the spirit of self-improvement and resilience for Lanzarote because it was the first sporting event organised and held on the island after the pandemic with all the necessary health and safety guarantees.”

The event maintains a firm commitment to sustainability. No cups will be provided at refreshment points, so all participants must bring their own containers for liquids. Littering outside of designated areas or any failure to comply with environmental regulations will result in immediate disqualification.

Registration for the Yaiza Extremo Sur remains open until November 19 via the official websites: www.yaizaextremosur.es and www.cronolinecanarias.com.

Now established as one of the most important events on the Canary Islands’ sporting calendar, the Yaiza Extremo Sur perfectly combines athletic challenge, spectacle, and the unparalleled natural scenery of southern Lanzarote. This edition promises excitement, high competitiveness, and an exceptional level of athleticism.
