Some of the world’s best surfers and bodyboarders are assembling for the Quemao Class surf competition, which will take place at the village of La Santa some time before the end of the year.

The competition is currently on an “amber light”, waiting for the optimum wind and wave conditions. Once the green light is given, participants will converge on the small fishing village to ride its famous El Quemao wave, which breaks directly offshore from the village.

Among the participants will be renowned big wave specialists Masion Barnes (USA) and Lucas Chumbo (Brazil), veteran Basque surfer Ariz Aranburu, Irish waveriders Gearóid McDaid and Conor Maguire.

Bodyboarders will include Mike Stewart (Hawaii), Abner de Arce (Puerto Rico) and Amaury Lavernhe and Robin Legros from the French island of Reunión.

Manuel Lezcano and José María Cabrera will represent Lanzarote in the surf contest, with Paul Lecouey bodyboarding for his home island.
