Two unions representing bus drivers and other staff of Lanzarote’s Intercity Bus company have announced a strike that will start on the 3rd April.
Comisiones Obreras and Intersindical Canaria have called the strike in response to the “refusal of the company to address wage claims, working hours and rest periods.”
The unions claim that no progress has been made on these matters, as well as the “serious precariousness” of the service and the reduced spending power of employees.
They claim that the company alters working hours “constantly”, with no regard for days off and rest periods; and that drivers are expected to travel from all parts of the island with no expenses for travel or fuel. They also complain about precarious hiring practices that are not in line with the contract the company has with the Cabildo.
The strike will affect “all services,” the unions claim, although minimum services will apply.
