A major new investment in diagnostic technology is now operational at the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital in Lanzarote. The hospital has officially launched a new, high end CT scanner, a move described as a significant upgrade for medical imaging on the island.
The new equipment was presented on Monday, January 19, during a visit by the director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Adasat Goya, and the director of the Lanzarote Health Area, Erasmo García.
The Hospital procured the state of the art scanner for 488,735 euros. A further 86,000 euros was invested in essential works to adapt the hospital’s radiology rooms for its installation.
Enhanced Precision and Patient Safety
The scanner replaces one of the two existing machines in the department. It is a high-end model capable of performing highly complex studies with improved image resolution. Key advancements include the use of a control tablet and GO technologies, designed to facilitate and optimise the workflow for radiographers and clinicians.
A major benefit is its low dose technology, which incorporates a tin filter to reduce radiation exposure by up to 60% while maintaining excellent image quality and detail. The system also allows for rapid image reconstruction.
Further enhancing both precision and safety is an additional camera that provides a full view of the patient. This artificial intelligence based technology ensures optimal patient positioning, improves procedural efficiency, and contributes to higher image quality while optimising radiation dose.
The new unit also integrates innovative solutions such as remote control capabilities and a revamped workstation design. These features provide greater flexibility and mobility during examinations and improve overall patient comfort.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
During the visit, SCS director Adasat Goya emphasised the investment reflects a wider commitment to advancement. He stated the equipment responds “to the public health system’s commitment to continuous improvement and to the Molina Orosa Hospital’s commitment to innovation and quality care.”
The hospital’s medical director, Luis Carlos Moreno, highlighted the direct benefits for patient care. He pointed out that the new CT scanner strengthens the department’s diagnostic capacity and “facilitates specific examinations with a lower dose of radiation, which benefits patients’ wellbeing and improves their healthcare experience.”
