The outgoing Cabildo President, María Dolores Corujo, has been chosen to head the Socialist Party’s list for the province of Las Palmas in the forthcoming elections on July 28th.

The nomination virtually guarantees that Corujo will be elected to serve as an MP in Spain’s Congress.

It is the first time a politician from one of the smaller islands has headed the Socialist lists in either of the Canarian provinces, where representatives from Gran Canaria and Tenerife usually take precedence.

Announcing the candidature in Madrid yesterday, Canarian President Ángel Victor Torres challenged the leader of the opposition in Spain, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, to “keep his word and allow the most-voted party to govern, ” and claimed that the Socialists had clearly won the Canarian elections.

Nevertheless, Torres is certain to be ousted from the presidency  by the pact between the second- and third-most-voted parties, the CC and the PP, as is perfectly normal in Spain’s proportional voting system.
