This year’s Ironman Lanzarote competition on May 23rd will be the last to be organised by Club La Santa, it was announced yesterday.
A press release issued jointly by Club La Santa and IRONMAN at noon said “Club La Santa, the hotel and sports complex that has hosted the 34 editions of the race, will step down as the operator and title partner of IRONMAN Lanzarote from 2027.
No reason has been given for the decision, and there is no indication as to who might take over the running of the oldest Ironman triathlon in Europe, although Ironman’s organisers in Europe have said they will shortly be opening inscriptions for the 2027 event.
The Lanzarote Ironman was the brainchild of Kenneth Gasque, who worked at La Santa in the 1980s and was inspired to bring the event to the island after competing in Ironman races on Hawaii. The first Lanzarote Ironman took place in 1992,
The competition has been the catalyst for Lanzarote’s outstanding reputation as a sporting destination, far outstripping the other Canary Islands.
