Arrecife Ayuntamiento have announced the protection of the César Manrique sculpture during carnivals after the sculpture was covered in rubbish last weekend.
Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has announced on Facebook that the famous sculpture of César Manrique overlooking the sea on Arrecife’s sea front will now be closed off during carnivals to protect the sculpture.
Last weekend the sculpture was littered with empty cans, plastic cups, tissue and takeaway boxes, along with the rest of the area that held one of the carnival celebrations.
De León has denounced these actions and stated that the sculpture will be protected.
“As mayor of the city, I told the representatives of the association – who donated the sculpture – that we would adopt this measure. I received their approval, and they were grateful that we were resolute.
The image and memory of Manrique, our most international ecological artist, deserves the respect of the city where he was born”, de León stated on Facebook.
