The Workers Commissions trade union (CCOO) warns that the workers at the Meliá Sol Lanzarote hotel plan to organise a strike this Friday and Saturday.

The strikes are planned to take place this Friday (9am – 11am and 4pm – 6pm) and on Saturday (1pm – 3pm and 8pm – 10pm.)

In a press release, the CCOO stated:

We have to tell the tourism bosses in the Canary Islands loud and clear that if they want to play hotel games, they should buy a Monopoly board. The lives and health of working people are not to be trifled with.

Despite having broken all records for tourism turnover in 2024 with 24,000 million euros and having more than 17 million inhabitants, we continue to observe how the employers lament the lack of staff and constantly repeat the expression ‘absenteeism’ instead of supporting measures to promote health at work, alleviate workloads and improve conditions. Meanwhile, workers in the sector are condemned to survive on extremely precarious wages, given the high cost of living in the non-capital islands.

Expenditure per room in hotels grew by 8% in December 2024, the second best figure in the country. Hotel companies in the Canary Islands managed to set higher prices on average in 2024 in all months of the year compared to 2023, capturing 50% of all foreigners on holiday in Spain in December.

All the data show that the Canary Islands enjoy a privileged and attractive position for tourists and investors, but this is in contrast to the reality of the sector, where there is no willingness to improve the work-life balance and reduce an ever-increasing workload.

After the rallies in front of the doors of several hotels and the headquarters of the tourism employers’ associations, this stoppage is one more example of the actions that we will carry out until we reach the general strike of the hotel and catering sector in the Canary Islands at Easter.
