Arrecife’s carnival came to an end last night with the traditional Burial of the Sardine, and other towns will now have their turn to party.

Dancers, drummers and scores of black-clad “widows” escorted the gigantic fish along the capital’s seafront to Playa Reducto, before members of Los Simplones – the winners of the carnival’s murgas contest – carried it on their shoulders to the funeral pyre.

The sardine was then cremated on a big bonfire on the sand, followed by a fireworks display.

Arrecife Ayuntamiento estimates that around 20,000 people attended the big parade on Monday, during a carnival that has been marked by good weather.

Next up is Puerto del Carmen, where there’ll be a grand gala this evening at 8pm in the Old Town Harbour featuring the fabulous costumes and dance routines of Tia’s Los Guaracheros and Yaiza’s Sur Caliente. There’ll be a free concert by Manny Manuel tomorrow night at 9.30 pm in the same place.

On 5pm on Saturday, the Grand Parade will assemble on the Avenida de las Playas , setting off from Barcarola (near the Music Hall Tavern) at 5pm and heading to Fariones.
