María Fernández, the Director General of Transport and Mobility for the Canarian Government, has announced that free bus travel in the Canary Islands will continue throughout 2026.

Spain’s Congress of Deputies approved the Law of Sustainable Mobility on Thursday, which included a guarantee that free public transport for regular users would be maintained on the Canary Islands for 2026.

The article requires the Canarian Government to show successful implementation of the 100% discount for season tickets and multi-tickets before January 31, 2026, and to maintain it until December 31st, 2026.

Fernández said “Let us remember that free travel has allowed Canarians to change the way they move and to accept jobs, attend educational centres, and receive medical treatment thanks to this measure, which has proven to be a relief for families’ pockets. With this approval, free public transport in the Canary Islands is consolidated as a right and not a privilege.” Free transport was originally introduced on the islands in 2023 to mitigate the effects of the surge in inflation following the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
