Canal Gestion, the Madrid-based company in charge of Lanzarote’s water supply, has issued a press release highlighting the “concerning” consumption of water on the island.

The company point out that the average daily consumption of water by each Lanzarote resident in 2024 was 194 litres a day. This is more than twice the daily limit of 80 litres recommended by the United Nations, and far higher than the average consumption in Spain (128 litres per day) and the Canaries (115 litres).

The press release claims that “water use continues to be intensive, which is unsustainable on an island without natural water resources depending entirely on desalination, a process with high energy and economic costs.”

The communication does not differentiate between residential, and tourist use, although it is well established that tourists use more water than residents. Nevertheless, even in 2020, when tourism was paralysed by the pandemic, the average consumption was 159 litres per day.

Canal Gestión has launched a campaign, Water Lost in Silence, to remind residents to use water conscientiously.
