Lanzarote’s Cabildo has launched a campaign against prostitution to mark the International Day Against Exploitation of Women and children on September 23rd.
The campaign is aimed at men, and features photos of normal men with the word “Putero” (a slang word for a man who uses prostitutes) stamped over their faces.
Marci Acuña, the Cabildo’s Social Welfare councillor said, “Lanzarote is not exempt from the problem of sexual exploitation, given that since 2021, 395 women working as prostitutes have been attended by the Medicos del Mundo organisation on the island.”
Acuna said that the campaign “is aimed at men, who are the ones that use women and commit the crime.” He also added that the campaign would raise consciousness among “those who normalise this practice, as looking the other way allows it to exist.”
