The Cabildo will declare the César Manrique Airport a “sensitive area” in terms of its taxi service, allowing cabbies from all over the island, and not just San Bartolomé, to pick up fares.

Currently, outside operators can only pick up once the taxi queue reaches a certain length, but the Canarian Government provides the option of overriding these rules when a location is declared as a sensitive area of importance for the economy.

The Cabildo has highlighted the regular queues that build up, the “considerable” waiting times and the lack of taxis in San Bartolomé in order to justify the decision. It has also pointed out that Arrecife suffers a lack of taxis, especially when cruise ships are docked.

The town’s councils and taxi associations will have two weeks to respond and lodge objections or amendments to the declaration.
