Lanzarote’s Cabildo yesterday approved a motion to initiate and develop the taxilanzarote.net service, aimed at updating and unifying the island’s taxi services.
Taxilanzarote.net includes an automated dispatch service, electronic payment capacity, interoperability between municipalities and a fairer distribution of work among taxi drivers.
It aims to reduce waiting times, improve coverage in less-connected zones of the island and offer a real alternative to unfair competition from unregulated private platforms.
The motion urged the island’s Ayuntamientos to sign up to the initiative “voluntarily and in a coordinated manner” and has also requested collaboration from the Canarian Government. There is currently no requirement for island taxi ranks to sign up to the service. Nevertheless, the Cabildo has made it clear that it wishes to introduce a law requiring mandatory use of the platform.
