Lanzarote’s Cabildo is working with the island of La Palma a to boost beekeeping on Lanzarote and help conserve the Canarian black bee, the strain that is native to the islands.
The two islands have reached an agreement that will allow La Palma to provide Lanzarote beekeepers with queen bees, reinforcing the presence of the black bee on the island without the need for hybridisation.
There are currently eight registered beekeepers on the island, with 300 hives that are mostly located in the north of the island. Although the amounts of honey produced are not great, the quality is excellent, and bees also play an important role in the pollination of local crops.
Bees will be especially busy at the moment as millions of flowers bloom after the winter rains.
