The President of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has stated that it is “completely untrue” that the island does not want British tourists, or that it is trying to reduce their numbers.
In an article for the Canarias7 newspaper , Corujo responded to calls for her to clarify comments that had been reported widely in the British press by saying “I cannot clarify something I never said.”
“It’s completely untrue that that Lanzarote does not want British tourists, or seeks to reduce their numbers. British tourists have always been, and will continue to be, welcome in Lanzarote.”
She added “In Lanzarote we also have the good fortune to have had a wonderful British resident community for many years, one that is sensitive to the environment and engaged in the sustainable development of the island.”
Corujo said that she had been saddened by the “false controversy about British tourism that has been caused by misinformation. Some have taken things out of context, and others have deliberately twisted my words about the future of the island’s tourist sector.”
