Lanzarote’s birth rate has risen by 10% in the first four months of the year, suggesting that the effects of the pandemic are now firmly in the past.
334 children were born on the island between January and April, an average of over 80 a month. If trends continue, this means that around 1,000 children will be born here this year.
The highest birth rates on Lanzarote, of over 1,500 a year, were recorded between 2007 and 2008, in the boom economy years that brought many young people to the island.
Of the births, just over 20% were carried out by cesarian section, while more than two-thirds involved an epidural. This also reflects a greater tendency towards the use of epidurals.
