Lanzarote has been left in shock after a five-month-old baby was killed and six people were injured in a traffic accident in Playa Blanca yesterday.
The tragic event occurred at around 6.20 pm yesterday evening when a car left the road and ploughed into a group of people, reported as being British tourists, on Avenida Archipielago, near the HL Hotel and Aqualava, in Playa Blanca.
A five-month baby was reported as having died shortly after the incident by CECOES, the emergency services operator. Of the other victims, two women were also injured severely while two more women and two men suffered “moderate” injuries. One of the female victims was flown to the Dr Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria for treatment and the other five were taken to the Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife.
This morning, Yaiza Ayuntamiento stated that the driver of the car is a 23-year-old British woman who lives in Playa Blanca. The driver “showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs while driving”, according to investigations by local police.
Yaiza Ayuntamiento has expressed “its solidarity with the victims of the accident and their families”, as well as “absolute respect for the official investigation into the events.” The council also thanked the security and emergency forces who attended the harrowing scene.
