UD Lanzarote have had a strange first half of the season. They have been invincible at home, winning eight and drawing one in their nine matches played at the Ciudad Deportiva; however, on the road, they have picked up just five out of a possible 21 points.
This superb home form leaves them in third position and five points away from leaders CD Atlético Paso with a game in hand. Only the league leaders are guaranteed automatic promotion, whilst the next four teams battle it out in the playoffs looking for a spot in RFEF 2 (Fourth Tier).
The Rojillos (The Reds) had two home games either side of the Christmas break. On the 21st December they faced second-placed side UD Tamaraceite and Lanzarote put in their best performance of the season thrashing the Gran Canarian outfit 5-0 and leapfrogging them in the table.
Prior to this match the club had asked their fans to bring a toy or food for those in need over Christmas and the response was outstanding, with hundreds of toys donated along with food and sanitary products.
The next match on the 4th January was the local derby versus San Bartolomé CF. The visitors have struggled this season but going into this match they had been unbeaten for four games, winning eight vital points which lifted them clear of the relegation zone. However, their streak of form was not to continue as Lanzarote eventually wore down their neighbours and cruised to a 3-0 victory.
With three consecutive wins under their belt and in second position, the Rojillos felt confident travelling to mid-table side Real Unión Tenerife but their poor away form continued as they fell to a 1-0 loss.
It is simple to come and see a match as the stadium is next door to the central bus station in Arrecife and local bus number 3 runs every 30 minutes back and forth to Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise. From Playa Blanca it is bus number 60 but it runs less frequently. If you are coming by car then parking nearby is easy as Arrecife is a ghost town on Sundays. There is no need to book tickets you simply turn up and pay on the door. Pay on the door.
