Arrecife Ayuntamiento have announced that they will be beautifying the Barlovento sculpture, one of the least beloved of Manrique’s works, on the roundabout near the Gran Hotel.
It’s fair to say that, of all Manrique’s work, the sculpture titled Barlovento is one of the least beloved.
The lump of rusting metal is also titled “Homage to the Sea”, but it usually referred to as “La Chatarra” (Scrap Metal) by locals – appropriately, as it was made of salvage from ship-breakers in 1970.
The sculpture has occupied a place at the roundabout near the Gran Hotel for many years, and was briefly livened up by a Pikachu toy during the Pokemon GO craze in 2016. But now its surroundings are being beautified to make it a central part of the new pedestrianized El Reducto area.
Concrete kerbs are being replaced by volcanic stone, gardening work is being done and illumination of the sculpture after dark is also planned.
Arrecife Council also plans to “value and highlight all the artistic work created by César Manrique”. Along with the roundabout at El Reducto, projects are underway for the renovation of the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá, the Plaza de Las Palmas (next to the church of San Ginés) and the waterfall at the Charco de San Ginés
