Arrecife Ayuntamiento has begun 2026 by advancing plans to increase the number of taxi drivers operating in the capital, with 52 applicants now admitted to the next phase of the selection process.

Mayor Yonathan de León is implementing a series of measures aimed at improving the public taxi transport network. Among these was an update to taxi fares in 2025, which were previously among the lowest in Spain.

In conjunction with the fare review, the Department of Transport and Mobility has increased the frequency of licensing tests. This allows existing license holders to hire more drivers. Furthermore, a line of aid has been established to help the sector incorporate vehicles adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Councillor González Altuve explained the expected impact of the new admissions. “During the first four months of the year, once these tests have been carried out, the sector will have more professionals available to cover the three daily shifts, seven days a week. This will contribute to a greater presence and rotation of taxis in the city of Arrecife.”

The move is seen as a direct response to calls for improved service availability and is part of a broader package of improvements promoted during the current term.
