The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de Léon, will formally request that the Spanish government recognise Arrecife as a catastrophe zone following Saturday’s floods in the capital.

If the request is accepted, it will allow individuals and households affected by the floods to access emergency assistance.

Scores of homes and buildings were flooded on Saturday afternoon, among them the Conservatory of Music, the Official Language School and the Red Cross HQ.

Yesterday saw a huge clean-up operation in Arrecife, and also in Costa Teguise, as the resort prepares for the imminent Easter holiday. Other municipalities on Lanzarote, and the island of Fuerteventura, have sent volunteers to the area to assist.
