We took a quick look at the new Aldi in Arrecife this morning, which was packed with eager shoppers wanting to see what the new supermarket had to offer.

It’s not the first ever Aldi on the island. There was a store in Arrecife before Lidl or Mercadona ever got here, but it closed down several years ago to be replaced by a Eurospar. But the chain’s arrival on Lanzarote has been eagerly awaited by shoppers who will welcome more competition at a time when inflation and food prices are still high.

Today’s opening was crowded, with queues waiting to get in and several trolley jams in the aisles – you might want to wait until things calm down a bit before you visit. As for the supermarket, it follows the model of other German budget supermarket, with a similar layout to Lidl stores.

There’s a fresh bakery, a fruit and veg section, fridges and freezers full of meat, dairy products and fish, and those weird central aisles where you’ll find power drills, hammocks, fitness equipment and crayons. 20% of all products, and 50% of fruit and veg are sourced from the Canaries.

The prices seem to be competitive, with the items we looked at comparing favourably to other supermarkets. There are also plenty of special offers to celebrate the store’s first month.

To get there, head to Arrecife’s western side and aim for the large roundabout that connects you with the Rambla Medular (inner ring road). If you’re arriving on the main road from Playa Honda, take the third small exit signposted S. Francisco J. and you’ll find the supermarket’s car park on your right. If you’re not doing a big shop, there’s also some parking by the side of the Rambla Medular itself (second exit), but it’s usually occupied during daytime.
