The Cabildo have announced a 300,000 euros investment into Lanzarote’s abattoir to “reform the slaughter lines that have become obsolete over the years.”.
“Through the Canary Islands Development Funds (FDCAN) and the Cabildo’s own funds,” Cabildo President, Oswaldo Betancort stated, “we are going to inject about 300,000 euros to reform the slaughter lines of the slaughterhouse that have become obsolete over the years.”
“The new machinery,” adds Betancort, “is going to meet the needs of the sector in terms of meat production, taking into account the best safety and health conditions.”
The new machinery, consisting of a new ramp, stunner, hanging rail and peeler, the abattoir facilities will be modernised and will provide a better service and sanitary quality in meat processing.
Since the slaughterhouse opened, the regulations on food hygiene and animal welfare have been modified over time, and the Cabildo have stated that they are committed to modernising the facilities and acquiring new machinery adapted to current regulations.
Betancort apologised “for the inconvenience that the duration of the works may cause to professionals in the sector, but the truth is that since 2019 the 10-year period that obliged the administrations to modernise and adapt the island slaughterhouses ended.”
“It was and is our responsibility to comply with the legal parameters and not leave the livestock sector in legal limbo,” he concluded, hoping that the works progress at a good pace and are executed in a timely manner.
