At eleven minutes past three today it will be exactly a year since the eruption in La Palma commenced.
The volcano, now officially known as Tajogaite, destroyed 3,000 buildings, 73 kms of road and left 7,000 people temporarily homeless. In the centre of the lava flow, some houses now lie underneath 55 metres of solid lava. The eruption ended officially on 13th December 2021.
1,500 La Palma islanders still have not returned to their homes because of the risks caused by hot ashes and gases. Nevertheless, nature is returning to the lava fields and the seabed, and the volcano has offered new opportunities for tourism.
