57% of the  desalinated water produced in 2022 was not paid for, according to recent figures from Canal Gestión. This means that over half of the water produced on the island was either lost by leakages in the mains system , or consumed fraudulently.

The figure is an improvement on 2021, when over 60% of water was lost, but this could be explained by the fact that demand has increased after the pandemic.

28.2 million cubic tons of water were desalinated last year, but only 12.3 cubic tons were invoiced and paid for.

46% of water is used by domestic clients, while 42% is sued by industry and tourism. The remaining 12% is used for irrigating crops.
