Lanzarote faces a busier year than ever in 2026, although signs towards the end of last year suggest that, while tourism continues to thrive, tourist spending is decreasing. The housing crisis, water situation and pressure on public services are likely to dominate the news as they did last year, and the new Canarian rental law will also come into effect.

No elections are scheduled until 2027 but, having lost the support of one of his key governing partners in his ruling coalition last year, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez may be forced to go to the country early. Meanwhile, the volume of political debate will be turned up on Lanzarote as politicians eye the regional and council elections of May 2027.

The planned widening of the LZ-40 road from the airport to Puerto del Carmen is likely to cause delays and detours, and airport delays will remain a possibility as the EES system is fully realised.

As well as the public holidays, here are some of the events to look forward to on Lanzarote in the next 12 months. There’ll be plenty more, though, so stay up to date at www.gazettelife.com.
