Tomorrow, May 30th, is Canary Day, a public holiday on the Canary Islands. To celebrate the date, the island will be staging dozens of events that highlight Canarian music, food, sport and culture. Here are some of the main events around the island, starting with the three tourist resorts: 

Puerto del Carmen

The Plaza de Varadero in Puerto del Carmen’s old Town will be the scene of the action in Puerto del Carmen.

May 29th

Concert by Trío Mistura & Los Campesinos: 7.30 pm, Plaza de Varadero in Puerto del Carmen. Los Campesinos will perform after the Mistura Trio.

May 30th

Flag raising at 11 am, followed by Canarian sports (wrestling, shepherd’s leap, plough lifting)

Regatta of Jolateros 12 midday: races in tiny tin boats at Playa el Poríl.

Folk concert with Trio Mistura, Parranda Tebete, Guagaro and other folk groups. 12 midday onwards. Plaza de Varadero 

Costa Teguise

May 30th

Concert by José Vicente Pérez and Adrián Niz: 11:30 AM at the Pueblo Marinero in Costa Teguise. At 1:00 PM, the Con Raíz folk group will perform on Calle Las Olas.

May 31st

Activities and Stalls. 7 pm. At the Pueblo Marinero

Playa Blanca

May 31st

Wrestling and Music: At 11:30 a.m., the program Municipal Canarian Wrestling School will perform on the town beach. This will be followed by a 12:30 p.m. performance by the La Aldaba group on Calle Limones.

Arrecife

May 30

Food Fair From 12:00 midday to midnight.

Concert by Los Gofiones in the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá. Also performing: Los Buches, Los Gorfines, Los Labradores, Teguey, and Son del Norte.

May 31st

Food Fair From 12:00 midday to midnight Concert by Los Sabandeños. 9:00 PM, Lanzarote

Concert by Los Sabandeños, 9:00 PM, in the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá. Also appearing – Cristina Ramos, Efecto Pasillo, Bourbon, and La Edad de Oro.

Tías

May 30th

Tasting and traditional games in Tías: May 30th, starting at 11:00 a.m. Flag raising followed by a free tasting of traditional Canarian food. This will be followed by an exhibition of traditional games and performances by folk groups and the Tías Music School.

La Villa de Teguise

May 29th

Tenderete (folk music performance) in the municipal marquee. 8 pm. Entry is free.

Yaiza

May 29th

Concert by Acatife. .8.30 pm, Plaza de los Remedios, Yaiza.

May 30th

Flag Raising: at 10:30 a.m., the Municipal Band will perform, and there will be Canary Ball workshops. The Rubicón Folk Group will also perform. The institutional ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m.Afterwards, Women’s Canarian wrestling will take place between two teams followed by folk music, workshops, and camel rides.

San Bartolomé

May 30th

Raising the Canary Islands flag in San Bartolomé: 11:30 AM, Plaza León y Castillo. 12 midday at the Plaza de Santa Elena in Playa Honda. A party will then be held there with performances by the Folklore School and the Pal’ Porrón parranda.

Tinajo

May 30th

Workshops and exhibitions, as well as performances by the Tinajo String School, the Peña San Roque Band, the Tinajo Singing School, and the Guiguan Project. Also present will be the parrandas AC Sondemar, Parranda Pa’l Porrón, the Gurfines Son los del Puerto, and the group Son del Norte.

May 31st

Concerts by Pepe Benavente at 4:30 pm, AC Sondemar at 6:00 pm, and Kike Pérez at 7:00 pm. Starting at 8:00 pm, it’s the turn of Parranda Pa’l Porrón and Swing del Norte.

Haría

May 29th

Table-decorating contest at, 8:30 pm in the square. Music will be provided by the parrandas La Aldaba, Son del Norte, and Pa’l Porrón.

May 30th

Hirachi Afonso concert, 8:00 pm, at the La Tegala Sociocultural Center.
