Supermarkets have improved hugely on Lanzarote over the last 15 years. The arrival of budget names such as Lidl and Aldi have increased competition, forcing existing chains to up their game considerably.
Hiperdino is a Canarian-owned chain that has improved considerably since a takeover around ten years ago. It runs three types of stores: large, out-of-town hypermarkets which go under the name Hiperdino; medium-sized stores located in towns called Superdino and smaller Hiperdino Express stores in the resorts.
Eurospar is the name for larger Spar supermarkets, while smaller ones go under the name Spar. Spar was the only main rival for Hiperdino on Lanzarote until Lidl arrived in 2010, followed by Marcadona and Aldi. However, other chains well known in Spain, such as Carrefour and Dia, have yet to make their presence known.
The cheapest produce is usually found in the large hypermarkets, and the smaller resort-based stores are the most expensive. Spanish chain Mercadona, and the German brands Lidl and Aldi all operate one type of supermarket, with standard prices throughout.
You’ll also find some smaller supermarkets dotted around the island, such as Unide, the Lanzarote-based Chacón chain, which specialises in meat and fish, and Overseas stores which import British goods.
Online shopping and home delivery is available from some supermarkets, with charges for a delivery at around €7.
