The water taxi shuttles back and forth from Puerto del Carmen’s harbour to the sleek marina at Puerto Calero a dozen times each day. It’s the perfect beginning or end to one of the loveliest excursions on the island.

For thousands of holiday-makers, Puerto del Carmen’s favourite walk is undoubtedly the short coastal stroll to the sleek marina of Puerto Calero.

This short stretch of coast is the setting for some of the most desirable land on Lanzarote, where opera singers and rock stars have purchased luxury properties with unrivalled sea views on and around the Barranco de Quíquere, one of the ravines that feeds into the calm, protected bay.

Although the walk isn’t suitable for those with limited mobility, it should be easy enough for any reasonably fit person.

Start at the old town harbour in Puerto del Carmen, where you stroll along the wooden walkway on the land-side of the harbour before a steep climb up the zig-zagging steps to the promenade called Calle de los Verdes. Take a breather – that’s the worst bit over!

Continue along the top of the low, black cliff that overlooks Puerto del Carmen’s harbour, before it dips back down to a coastal path that leads you along the shore. If you fancy a dip or a spot of sunbathing on the rocks you’ll find steps leading down to the sea, but respect the fact that this spot is often used by nudists, as well as snorkellers who love the crystal clear waters.

At Puerto Calero you can shop, dine, feed the fishes in the marina, hop onto the Yellow Submarine or even enjoy a market on Tuesday or Friday morning. It’s a great place for simply soaking up the luxury atmosphere.

Then you can hike back the way you came or, even better, voyage back in style on Líneas Romero’s unique water taxi. The journey takes just 25 minutes and a one-way trip costs €11 for adults €8 for children). There’s a bar on board and you can enjoy an entirely new perspective of the coast you walked along earlier, with views of hidden caves you didn’t know existed.
