Lanzarote’s political parties have expressed their shock and sorrow at the sudden death of Cristina Calero, the 35-year-old deputy for Lanzarote in the Canarian Parliament.

Calero was a secondary schoolteacher before becoming a councillor for the Coalición Canaria (CC) in the Ayuntamiento of Arrecife. In 2023 she was elected as one of the deputies representing Lanzarote in the Canarian Parliament.

On Monday she was admitted to hospital in Arrecife, and her death was announced on Tuesday.

“We are shattered,” said the CC in a press release. “She has left us too soon, but left an indelible mark – one of enthusiasm, dedication and love for her islands. Today we have lost a colleague and a friend.”

Other political parties – Nueva Canarias, the PP and the Socialists – also offered their condolences.
