Every year, SARA – Lanzarote’s largest cat and dog shelter – creates a calendar to raise essential funds and promote its important work. This year, it is highlighting just how fun-loving cats and dogs are!
All of them deserve a chance at happiness. Staff and volunteers provide exceptional care and do their best to keep the animals active and engaged. The goal is to take the dogs for a daily walk, but this isn’t always possible. The shelter always needs enthusiastic, active volunteers to walk them (contact SARA to find out how). People are also encouraged and welcome to come and help socialise the cats.
On some weekends, volunteers take a small group of dogs to the dog-friendly beach near Playa Honda, which they adore. However, they spend most of the day at the shelter. That is why the top priority is always finding new homes for SARA’s animals, either here or abroad.
One of the stars of the calendar is Dama, who loves nothing more than splashing in a muddy puddle on a hot day! She is a gorgeous, funloving young dog who has been at the shelter since February. At just 16 months old, she has so much to offer the right person or family. You can find her details—and all the cats and dogs currently available for adoption—on the SARA website.
Another star is Lolo the Abuelo. Until recently, this elderly cat lived freely in the vet’s office and loved cuddles and being fussed over by anyone who visited. At 10+ years, he hasn’t had the easiest life, but it hasn’t affected his temperament. Lolo is positive for both feline leukemia and FIV, which means he has to live on his own or with other cats with the same condition. The good news is that he has been officially fostered through the shelter’s PAP scheme, which covers all healthcare costs! For details of the PAP scheme, see the SARA website.
Last year, SARA provided shelter to 119 dogs and 327 cats. Of these, 101 dogs and 194 cats found permanent homes through adoption, both on the island and abroad. The shelter provides urgent medical care to abandoned animals and sterilised 471 of Lanzarote’s street cats (with nearly 700 sterilisations in total). All of this, along with feeding and caring for its residents, costs a lot of money. Funds have been tight recently, so SARA urgently needs support from local residents and visitors to the island to keep the doors open and maintain its high standard of care.
Support SARA and the animals by purchasing the 2027 calendar, available from early November directly from the shelter for only €10. Want to do more? Consider pledging €1 a month through Teaming (as a well-known UK supermarket says, every little helps!). Visit https://www.teaming.net/protectoradeanimalesyplantassara. Also, check https://saraprotectora.org/ for additional ways to help and the opening hours. You can also contact the shelter by phone at (+34) 928 17 34 17 (English spoken).
