Lanzarote Cabildo has unanimously approved a motion to carry out an official study into the impact of holiday rental accommodation on the island.

The motion was presented by Myriam Barros of the Lanzarote en Pie – Sí Podemos party, who said that “It’s almost impossible to find rental accommodation on Lanzarote or La Graciosa because of the rise in rent. Holiday rentals aggravate this situation, but it also helps to redistribute tourist income more widely among families and everyday people.”

The initial aim of the study will simply be to count and register the location of all rental properties, and attempt to quantify their impact on the economy. Unoccupied properties will also be registered with a view to opening them as social housing.
