The Guardia Civil has seized more than 1,200 counterfeit sports kits of teams competing in the 2026 World Cup during two separate operations in Gran Canaria.
Officers a total of 1,269 fake items of sportswear from retail outlets in Ingenio and Telde after receiving a complaint from an authorised representative of a sports organisation.
The investigation began after authorities were alerted to the suspected sale of counterfeit football kits bearing protected trademarks and logos. Following enquiries, officers identified the outlets and carried out inspections to confirm the products were fake.
The first operation took place on 18 June at a shop in Carrizal, Ingenio, where officers seized 529 items of sports clothing, including shirts and shorts, featuring designs associated with several national teams set to compete at the 2026 World Cup.
The goods were valued at approximately €36,500. The shop owner is now under investigation for an alleged offence against industrial property rights, while the merchandise has been removed from sale and handed over to the judicial authorities.
A second operation followed on 21 June at a market stall in Telde, where officers confiscated a further 740 counterfeit football shirts with an estimated value of €61,375.
Among the seized items were kits representing national teams including Spain, Germany, Argentina, England and Portugal. Authorities say the range of products highlights how the popularity of major sporting events is often exploited by counterfeiters seeking to profit from increased demand.
Combined, the two operations resulted in the seizure of counterfeit sportswear worth more than €97,000.
The Guardia Civil said the actions form part of its ongoing work to combat offences against industrial property rights, protecting both consumers and legitimate brands from counterfeit goods.
The case has now been referred to the Investigating Court in Telde, which will continue the legal proceedings and determine any potential criminal liability.
