In response to a report naming the Canary Islands as the Spanish autonomous community with the most expensive shopping basket, Lidl has launched an extensive Christmas campaign focused on affordability and quality. The initiative includes a specially crafted festive menu for just €14 per person.
According to the Organisation of Consumers and Users (UCO), families in the Canaries can face an annual surcharge of up to €700 for healthy food. To support customers during this key consumption period, Lidl’s campaign, under the slogan “the wonderful is worth it every day,” emphasises fresh produce and savings.
A central feature this year is a complete Christmas menu designed to cost only €14 per person, inspired by festive classics and made entirely with Lidl’s own products.
The supermarket chain is also rolling out a Christmas assortment of more than 700 products across its 39 stores in the islands. The exclusive offering for the Canaries includes specialities such as Canarian octopus carpaccio with red mojo sauce, and various types of panettone and pandoro. The selection will change periodically, beginning this week with cream, pistachio, and biscuit roscones, alongside other items like Dubai liqueur.
Lidl’s festive range places a strong emphasis on fresh produce. Spanish meats, including stuffed pork, chicken, turkey rounds, and duck, are highlighted as the stars of the season. The selection also features various cold cuts and pâtés, such as ham and duck mousse, Iberian ham and foie gras. A substantial array of seafood and salted products is available, including salmon in puff pastry, smoked salmon, lobster, prawns, octopus, mussels, anchovies, and roe.
Furthermore, the catalogue includes different types of cheese, and classic Christmas sweets and desserts like creams, polvorones, marzipan, wafers, and nougat. The drinks offering features wines and sparkling wines recognised by the Peñín Guide, as well as products from the Deluxe and Favorina brands.
The €14 Festive Menu Explained
Lidl’s budget-friendly Christmas menu suggests a starter of cream of roasted pumpkin soup, a recipe that maximises flavour by roasting the vegetables first. This can be complemented with sautéed chickpeas for an added plant-based protein.
The first course consists of hake fillets au gratin with leek béchamel sauce, sourced from sustainable fishing certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). For the main, Lidl proposes a modern take on a traditional combination: duck breast served with a vegetable garnish, orange sauce, and caramelised carrot purée.
The meal concludes with a coulant made from Lidl’s Favorina white nougat, bathed in white chocolate and pistachio sauce, and sprinkled with blueberries and pieces of crispy wafer.
To help customers recreate this menu at home, Lidl is providing step-by-step recipes on its YouTube channel.
Over 700 Bazaar Items for the Christmas period
Complementing its food range, Lidl’s Christmas offering extends to more than 700 bazaar products. This includes a selection of toys, decorative items, Christmas sweaters, and other gift ideas, ensuring customers can find everything they need for their celebrations under one roof.
