This week, my kitchen in Lanzarote is quiet, but my senses are alive with the vibrant aromas of the Caribbean. I have taken a brief, personal break in Grenada, following the recent passing of my mother.

In her memory, I find myself drawn to the things that nourish the soul, which is how I discovered the incredible spice farms of this beautiful island, known fittingly as the ‘Spice Isle’. It is an experience that is inspiring the next chapter of my cooking for Event and Catering Solutions Lanzarote.

From Volcanic Soil to Tropical Rainforest

Just as Lanzarote’s unique volcanic jable soil gives our local produce its distinctive character, Grenada’s rich, tropical earth is a fertile ground for an abundance of flavour. Here, I have walked amongst nutmeg trees, seen cinnamon bark drying in the sun, and breathed in the intense fragrance of fresh ginger and turmeric roots pulled straight from the ground. To see spices in their raw, unprocessed state is a joy for any chef.

I was fortunate to visit a local farm, a community focused on sustainable growing, which resonated deeply with me. Having grown up in a farming community myself, I have always been an avid supporter of local producers, both here in Lanzarote and now, in Grenada. Witnessing a cooking demonstration using these freshly harvested ingredients was a masterclass in cooking.
