Tías Ayuntamiento will fly newly-designed warning flags for bathers who are colour blind on four of its main beaches. The flags feature special symbols superimposed on the coloured flag.
The green flag features a diagonal line with a triangle pointing right (bathing allowed). The yellow flag has a diagonal line (bathing with caution), and the red flag shows a triangle pointing left (bathing prohibited). Tías is the first council on Lanzarote to introduce this change, which has already been adopted by other parts of the Canary Islands.
8% of men and 0.5% of women suffer from red/green colour-blindness, suggesting that over 120,000 tourists who visit Lanzarote each year may suffer from the condition.
The flags will be displayed at Playa Grande, Playa Chica, Matagorda and Los Pocillos.
