The Cabildo’s Injured Wildlife Recovery department returned a loggerhead turtle to the sea on Friday, after several months of treatment.
The little turtle was discovered on the coast between Los Cocoteros and Charco del Palo in March, with injuries to three of its flippers. The injuries to one rear flipper were so severe that it had to be amputated.
It has been kept in Costa Teguise’s Aquarium until last week, when it was released back into the sea at Playa Bastian. Cabildo councillor Samuel Martín said, “We still have another nine turtles to be released.”
The Wildlife Recovery department has attended over 120 cases involving 30 species this year, including 13 turtles and a lizard. That number is likely to rise as we approach the season when young shearwaters take their maiden flights.
