The Canarian Camel Breeders Association has strongly condemned recent statements by the Franz Weber Foundation calling for the prohibition of camel rides on Lanzarote.
“This attack, coming from a millionaire lobby based in Switzerland, not only misinforms, but also endangers a key activity for the conservation of the Canarian camel, a unique breed in the world,” claims the association in a press release.
Guacimara Cabrera, President of the association, stated “These accusations are not only unfair, but also represent an attack on the many families who depend on this activity and on our cultural development.”
The association claims that “Camel rides in the Canary Islands are subject to strict regulations that guarantee weight limits, mandatory rest periods, constant veterinary care and external audits. These measures have made the Canary Islands a world leader in animal welfare and responsible tourism.”
They also cite a study from the University of Córdoba that claimed that the Canarian camel breed would be at risk of extinction without camel rides.
