LOVE LOCKS AND LOVE HANDLES

Dear Gazette,

A couple of rants: firstly the heart padlocks – when will they be removed from Playa Flamingo? Today I have noticed some up on the chains on Playa Blanca front opposite the Gondola restaurant. Soon every chain will be full of them. The shops need to stop selling them.

Secondly; when are people going to wear clothes when not at the beach? I’m fed up with seeing men walking around the shops topless, especially a man in his seventies in Hiperdino the other evening!

Yours, Jacqui

Ed: Neither the love locks or being topless are against the law, yet, Jaqui. In fact, Yaiza’s tourism department describes the locks as “another attraction” for tourists.

HOUSING STITCH-UP

Dear Gazette,

It’s not tourists’ fault for housing shortages, it’s the government’s fault for not looking after their people.

A Spaniard walks into a bank asks for an 80,000€ loan to buy a home. The bank says “Do you have a contract if so how long?” The Spaniard says “Six months”. The bank says “No”.

A Spaniard who owns an apartment can rent it for, lets say, 600€ per month but can get 600€ per week by renting to a tourist. What’s he going to do?

The government should build and rent to residents only – no VV, no tourists – but I know and you know they will not.

This is all about the Spanish owners looking after their own interests

All the best, Les

PASSPORT DEVELOPMENTS

Dear Ed,

I spotted a whole line of E-readers at the airport when I recently returned from the UK. There were about 25 of them, all still with protective wrapping on them. Let’s hope they’re rolled out soon and those queues are reduced – I waited about 40 minutes, which wasn’t bad but could still have been quicker, and I know several people have suffered much worse.

Another tip: the police checking passports will not stamp your passport if you show them that you’re a resident with your TIE. It’s not that serious if they do (as long as you’re a resident), but it may save a page or two on your passport.

Cheers, Kev Lee

A OR F?

Dear Gazette,

I always book a window seat on the plane when possible, – I love to look out of the window at the sights. However, I’m not sure whether the A (left-hand side) or the F (right-hand) are better for views of Lanzarote. What do you suggest?

Mari, via Email

Ed: We think the left-hand side is best in normal conditions – you get that brilliant swoop past Puerto del Carmen on arrival, and usually a good view of the whole island when departing. On evening flights, it also means that you’ll see the sun setting over the ocean horizon – a gorgeous display of colour that no one ever seems to mention.
