Seven out of ten people on Lanzarote believe that the current form of tourism causes irreparable damage to ecosystems.

In a survey conducted by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) they found that Lanzarote’s population is the most concerned about the environmental impact of tourism in areas of traffic and mobility, waste generation, pollution, and the damages it causes to ecosystems.

76.2% of surveyed people in Lanzarote believed that the increase in traffic and its detriment to mobility is perceived as a negative consequence of tourism – the highest percentage of the islands.

Over 60% share the same view in Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro. In contrast, less than 50% share this view in Fuerteventura and La Palma, and less than 40% in Gran Canaria.

Three out of four people on Lanzarote believe that tourism generates too much waste and pollution. The majority share the same view in Fuerteventura (70.6%) and Tenerife (64.6%), followed by La Gomera (61.7%), El Hierro (59.2%) and Gran Canaria (54.9%.) Only 40% of people surveyed in La Palma shared this view.

Additionally, seven out of ten people on Lanzarote believe that tourism causes irreparable damage to ecosystem, the highest percentage in the Canary Islands followed by Fuerteventura (62.2%), Tenerife (57.8%), La Gomera (54.4%), Gran Canaria (54.1%), El Hierro (52.9%) and La Palma (49.7%.)
