San Bartolomé Mayor, Isidro Pérez, has announced this week that the San Juan festivities will be held on Playa El Curita to protect the breeding areas of Kentish plovers.
Speaking on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, Pérez explained “We have moved the traditional bonfire from Playa Honda to Playa El Curita (between calle Cordel and calle Guanarame) and we will all live together in the festivities. There will be a bonfire, music and party in short. A perfect combination with the plover.”
San Juan is Spain’s bonfire night, a midsummer celebration that takes place throughout Spain on the evening of 23rd June, with large gatherings and bonfire parties.
Normally, the celebrations would take place on Playa Guacimeta, however, due to the presence of breeding Kentish plovers, San Juan festivities have been cancelled in previous years.
The little birds can sometimes be seen rushing along the seashore, pecking at tiny creatures. They lay their eggs in shallow dents on beaches or salt flats, meaning they are particularly vulnerable to disturbance.
