The newly opened Barcelo Hotel in Playa Blanca has offered employees a €500 bonus if they can persuade a friend, family member or acquaintance to work there.
La Voz de Lanzarote reports that the sum will be paid as long as the new employee remains in their post for at least six months, and the offer remains open until the end of March.
The initiative highlights the drastic staff shortage on Lanzarote, with many businesses being forced to close or reduce opening hours because staff cannot be found. The problem is worst in zones like Playa Blanca, where affordable accommodation is currently almost impossible to find, meaning that workers need a car or face an hour-long bus journey there and back from more affordable locations such as Arrecife and Playa Honda.
