Puerto del Carmen hosted the 13th annual Ocean Lava Race yesterday, and the results were a triumph for local athletes.

César Vera from Fuerteventura won the men’s contest in a tight-fought contest that went right to the wire. He snatched victory from Nicholas Ward, who had led for most of the race, with a margin of 25 seconds (4:04:42)

In the women’s race, favourite Lydia Dant romped home in 4:23:30, six minutes ahead of runner-up Zaira Lorenzo-. It’s another incredible result for Lydia, who is now the dominant female triathlete on the island after winning the Ironman earlier this year.

In the Olympic event (1,500m swim, 40 kms cycle, 10 kms run), Lanzarote lad Jorge Wilkes bossed the race in 1:55:32, leading from the start and winning by a margin of more than seven minutes. Carolina Nowak of Club La Santa registered an equally convincing win in the women’s event.
