The Consejo de Ministros is expected to lift the restrictions on face masks in hospitals, health centres and chemists this week.

Expected to be approved today, and once published in the BOE, the law that made masks compulsory in hospitals and other health centres will be lifted.

The only exceptions will be hospital zones with vulnerable people, such as surgery and post-surgery, intensive care units and immunodeficiency departments.

Masks will continue to be recommended by Spanish health services but, apart from the exceptions mentioned above, they will no longer be compulsory.

Obligatory face mask rules were first introduced in May 2020, two months after the first lockdown. In February 2022, mask use outdoors and in shared public places was no longer compulsory, and in February this year masks were no longer required on public transport.
