The Socialist party was the big victor of yesterday’s municipal elections on Lanzarote, but lost control of the Cabildo and will find it difficult to govern the Canarian Parliament for the next four years.
The Socialists were the most-voted party in five of Lanzarote’s seven municipalities, winning absolute majorities in Tías and San Bartolomé and coming first in Teguise for the first time in 40 years.
The Socialists also won in Arrecife and Haría, while Union Por Yaiza’s victory by absolute majority will see Óscar Noda continue as Mayor in Yaiza, and Jesús Machín of the Coalicion Canaria will be only Mayor for his party on the island.
Coalición Canaria narrowly won the Cabildo elections, meaning that ex-Teguise Mayor Oswaldo Betancort will take over the Presidency of the island’s main institution from Socialist María Dolores Corujo.
In the Canarian Government, the Socialists under Ángel Victor Torres won the popular vote, but will find it impossible to repeat the pact that has permitted them to govern for the last four years.
Other winners were the far-right Vox party, who now have representative in the Canarian Government, Lanzarote’s Cabildo and three municipalities for the first time. Meanwhile, the radical left Unidas Si Podemos party only managed to win one council seat, in Tías.
From today, negotiations will begin to decide the pacts that will rule the Canaries, the Cabildo and several Ayuntamientos. In most cases, the decision of the Coalición Canarias to pact with the Partido Popular or the Socialists will be key.
